Nyx, in Greek mythology, female personification of night but also a great cosmogonical figure, feared even by Zeus, the king of the gods, as related in Homer’s Iliad, Book XIV.

According to Hesiod’s Theogony, she was the daughter of Chaos and the mother of numerous primordial powers, including Sleep, Death, the Fates, Nemesis, and Old Age. The Orphic Rhapsodies made her the daughter and successor of Phanes, a creator god; she continued to advise her own successors (Uranus, her son by Phanes; Cronus, youngest son of Uranus; and Zeus) by means of her oracular gifts. Aristotle, in Metaphysics, Book XII, asserted that some “theologians” derive all things from night. This idea fits the theogony of Aristophanes’ Birds. Throughout antiquity Nyx caught the imagination of poets and artists, but she was seldom worshipped.

The Creation of the Gods


Hesiod mentions Nyx multiple times in his creation story (Theogony), where he talks about the origins of the Greek gods and goddesses:

Nyx went on to have many children of her own: some who were kind-natured and others who were terrible. As mentioned by Hesiod in the Theogony (1.209-42), Nyx's offspring includes:

Aether (Light/Radiance) with Erebus

Hemera (Day) with Erebus

Eris (Discord and Strife) (In some myths, she is the daughter of Zeus and Hera.)

Geras (Old Age) with Erebus

Nemesis (Retribution) with Erebus

Hypnos (Sleep) with Erebus

Oneroi (Dreams)

Phobeter (Nightmares)

Thanatos (Death) with Erebus

The Hesperides (Daughters of the Evening) with Erebus (Some myths list their parents as Atlas and Hesperis or Phorcys and Ceto.)

Apate (Deceit) with Erebus

Moros (Doom) (conceived without male intervention)

Twins Oizys (Misery, Depression and Anxiety) and Momos (Mockery, Scorn, and Blame) with Erebus

Morae (the Fates) with Erebus

Zeus – King of the Gods


It is not surprising that Zeus, father and king of the Olympian gods, should be one of the most important deities for the Greeks. Zeus was an ancient god who had the most far-reaching sphere of influence

BUT ONLY GODESS WHO CAN EASILY DEFEAT HIM ~ NYX

In the Iliad by Homer, Nyx rescues her son Hypnos after he faces the wrath of Zeus. Hera, Zeus' wife and queen of the Olympian gods resented the Greek hero Hercules because he was Zeus' son from a mortal woman, Alcmene. She brainstorms a plan to destroy his ships on his way home from Troy and asks Hypnos to put Zeus in a deep sleep, so he is none the wiser. Hera then whips up a storm that wrecks Hercules' ships. Zeus awakens and is furious with Hypnos, intent on throwing him off Mount Olympus. Hypnos goes running to Nyx for protection, knowing that Zeus would not dare cross the Night herself; such was her power



HER ABILITY ~~

As an Olympian deity, Nyx possesses supernatural attributes, such as immense strength, durability, speed, and reflexes. She has the ability to fly. Being a night goddess, she can wield the darkness and shadows in lots of physical ways, including blinding someone or turning into one herself.

  Hades was the god of underworld.....doesn't really make him sound evil. However, acc. to me he is one of the purest and kind hearted god. He just ruled underworld because he only wanted to maintain balance because naturally Zeus got thunder or sky; Neptune(Poseidon) got sea and  Hades had to take it just to maintain balance.
